Maryland Apostille

The Maryland Secretary of State issues Apostilles. Note: State or county documents (birth, death, marriage, divorce) go to the Secretary of State with the issuing office's seal and signature; notarized documents need Circuit Court clerk certification first.

Common Questions

What is the County Clerk requirement?

In Maryland the extra step is at the Circuit Court, not a County Clerk: notarized documents must first be certified by the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county where the notary was commissioned. Documents bearing the seal and signature of the issuing state or county department go directly to the Secretary of State.

Can I walk in?

No. Walk-ins are not available at this time. Once construction begins, this office will move to mail in only. For more information, please call the Certification Desk at 410-974-5521.
